Important Banking Tips for Indian Students

Open N26 before you leave India
N26 gives you a German IBAN the day you sign up. You'll need this IBAN for your Fintiba/Coracle blocked account and for some university enrollment processes. Don't wait until you land.
Anmeldung is the key to everything
Anmeldung = registering your address at the local Einwohnermeldeamt (residents' registration office). You cannot open DKB, Sparkasse, or Deutsche Bank without Anmeldung. Do it within 14 days of moving in.
You need two accounts
Most students end up with N26 (daily spending, easy app) + DKB (savings, travel card). This is the optimal setup for most Indian students in Germany.
Haftpflichtversicherung before you do anything
Before your bank account is even set up — get liability insurance. An accident on day 2 without insurance can cost €10,000+. FRIDAY, Getsafe, or CLARK offer online English-first Haftpflicht for ~€50/year.
Send money with Wise, not bank transfers
For regular transfers from India to Germany — use Wise. On a €500 transfer, Wise saves you €15–25 compared to a bank SWIFT transfer. On ₹1,00,000/year of transfers, you save ₹5,000–10,000.
