Every Indian student going to Germany needs APS. Some need more. Here is the complete, honest guide — what each test is, who needs it, and exactly how to prepare.

APS — Akademische Prüfstelle

Mandatory for ALL Indian students going to Germany
Non-negotiable. No APS = No German visa.
APS is not optional for Indian students. Germany introduced mandatory APS verification in 2009 after widespread document fraud. Every Indian student applying for a German student visa must go through APS.
What APS actually does

  • →Confirms your Indian university is recognized (Anabin H+)
  • →Issues an APS Certificate valid for life (10-year practical limit)
Engineering / B.Tech / B.E. — what to expect

For 4-year B.Tech/B.E. graduates: APS is a document verification appointment. You bring originals, they check and copy. They may ask a few factual questions about your degree (which semesters covered which subjects) — this is not a knowledge test, it is identity confirmation.

No oral examination. No subject knowledge test. No interview in the traditional sense.

For other fields (Arts, Architecture, Humanities, Law)

APS verification for arts, humanities, architecture, and social sciences is more detailed. Due to historically higher rates of document fraud in these fields, the APS officer may ask subject-specific questions to confirm you genuinely attended and completed your degree. This is closer to a brief oral verification than the engineering process.

Step-by-step APS process for India

Check Anabin for your university
Go to anabin.kmk.org. Search your Indian university. Status must be H+ (recognized). If it's H- or not listed — stop and call us before doing anything else. Some private Indian universities without full UGC accreditation are not recognized.

Register at aps-india.de
Create an account on the APS India portal. Select your degree type (Bachelor's, Master's) and field. You'll receive an applicant ID.

Upload documents online
Upload scanned copies of: all semester marksheets, degree/provisional certificate, medium of instruction certificate (if applicable), ID proof. Quality must be clear — blurry scans are rejected.

Pay the APS fee
Approximately €150 (paid online). This fee is non-refundable.

Book your in-person appointment
APS India has offices in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Bengaluru, Kolkata. Book a slot — busy slots fill 4–6 weeks ahead especially Nov–Feb.

Attend appointment with originals
Bring every original document you uploaded. APS officer compares originals to uploaded copies. Bring your ID. The appointment takes 30–60 minutes.

Receive APS Certificate
Arrives by post to your address within 4–8 weeks of appointment. The certificate is valid for life. Submit it with your German visa application.

TestAS — Test for Academic Studies

Voluntary but improves your admission chances

TestAS is an aptitude test administered by TestDaF-Institut. It measures your ability to think analytically and solve problems — not your subject knowledge. A good TestAS score can significantly improve your chances at TU Munich, RWTH Aachen, and other competitive universities even when your CGPA is borderline.

Who should take it
  • • Applicants to TU9 universities (TUM, RWTH, TU Berlin, KIT, etc.)
  • • Applicants with CGPA 7.5–8.5 who need a differentiator
  • • Anyone applying to highly competitive programs

Studienkolleg — Foundation Year

Only for students whose degree is NOT recognized by German universities
Who needs Studienkolleg?

If your Indian degree is not considered equivalent to the German Abitur (for undergrad) or a German Bachelor's (for Master's), you must complete a Studienkolleg preparatory year before university admission. Most Indian students with a 4-year B.Tech or B.E. from a recognized university do NOT need Studienkolleg.

DMAT — Deutsch + Mathematik Aufnahmetest

Entrance test for Studienkolleg admission

DMAT is the entrance test you must pass to gain admission into a public Studienkolleg. It tests German language ability and basic mathematics. The name and exact format varies slightly between states and institutions, but the D+M (Deutsch + Mathematik) structure is standard across Germany.

Mathematik component
  • • Algebra and functions
  • • Geometry and trigonometry

How to prepare
  • • Deutsch: Goethe Institut B1/B2 course material. Practice reading German newspaper articles (DW.com has learner-level news).
  • • Mathematik: Any German Abitur math practice book. The questions are standardized — Klett and Cornelsen Verlag books are the standard references.
  • • Past papers: Some Studienkollegs publish past papers — check the website of the specific Studienkolleg you're applying to.
  • • Preparation time: 3–6 months if you have B1 German and solid Class 12 math background.

DSH & TestDaF — German Language Tests

Required for German-taught programs

  • Levels: TDN 3, 4, 5 (most unis require TDN 4)
  • Format: Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking
  • Where: TestDaF-Institut exam centres in India (Hyderabad, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Pune, Bengaluru)
  • Fee: ~€175 per attempt
  • Dates: 5× per year (Feb, April, June, Sept, Nov)
  • Validity: Results valid indefinitely (no expiry)
  • Prep: 12–18 months from zero. 6–9 months from B1.
DSH
Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang
  • Levels: DSH-1, DSH-2, DSH-3 (most unis require DSH-2)
  • Format: Reading, listening comprehension, written expression
  • Where: Only administered at German universities in Germany — cannot be taken in India
  • Fee: €50–€100 at each university
  • Timing: Usually taken after arrival in Germany before semester starts
  • Important: Most universities that accept TestDaF will also accept DSH. Check your specific university.
