Skills That Appear in Every Surviving Job

Cross-analysed from all surviving Stepstone postings across every field. If a skill appears here — it is not optional.

#1
Python
12/12 fields

Appears in CS, ML, Data Eng, DevOps, Energy, Science, Physiker, Chemiker, Embedded, Mechanical

#2
German B2+
11/12 fields

Required in 85–97% of Electrical, Mechanical, Energy, Science roles and 65% of CS roles

#3
Domain Knowledge
10/12 fields

Every surviving role requires deep specialisation — generalists are the ones losing jobs to AI

#4
C / C++
7/12 fields

Embedded systems, defense, automotive, robotics, scientific computing — hardware-adjacent code

#5
MATLAB / Simulink
5/12 fields

Mechanical, Electrical, Energy, Physical AI, Signal Processing

#6
Docker / K8s
5/12 fields

Cloud, DevOps, Backend, Data Engineering — container skills now expected baseline

#7
SQL
5/12 fields

Data Analyst, Data Engineer, SAP Consultant, Business Analyst — data manipulation is universal

#8
English (professional)
9/12 fields

Multinational companies (HENSOLDT, Smiths Detection, ZEISS) require both German AND English

The Formula That Appears Across Every Surviving Field:
PythonGerman B2Domain ExpertiseOne hardware/systems skill OR one data skill

Every role that survived our Stepstone search — from HENSOLDT defense data engineering to Stromnetz Berlin grid protection to ZEISS research scientist — requires at least 3 of these 4 elements. The student who arrives in Germany with Python + German B2 + deep domain knowledge is 5× more employable than the one with only a degree.

5 Truths About Germany's Job Market in 2026

Derived directly from the Stepstone data — not opinion, not blog posts.

01
Python is the universal entry ticket

Python appears in 12 of 12 surviving job categories we analysed. It's in defense (HENSOLDT), energy (Beckhoff), automotive (Mercedes-Benz AI), science (Physiker/Chemiker), and every data role. If you study anything technical and don't know Python, you are missing the one skill that crosses all borders.

02
German B2 doubles your job market

Electrical Engineering: 21 English-language jobs vs 2,532 total. Energy Engineering: 5,000 English-friendly vs 37,298 total. German B2 is not a nice-to-have — it is a multiplier. Students who learn German while studying have 5× more roles available at graduation than students who don't.

03
AI eats the middle, not the top or bottom

AI is replacing the generic junior layer — junior frontend, manual QA, entry-level CAD, basic data entry. It is NOT replacing deep specialists (ML engineers, embedded systems, grid engineers, SAP consultants). The path forward is: go deeper, not broader. Specialisation is the protection.

04
SAP is Germany's hidden job market

1,260 SAP Consultant openings. 88 new per day. Indian students almost never target this. SAP runs 75% of German corporate ERP — every company upgrade, every S/4HANA migration, every AI module integration needs consultants. This is the most underutilised path for business and CS graduates in Germany.

05
Energy is the biggest expanding market

37,298 open positions for energy engineers. 2,295 new per day. Germany has a legally binding target to triple renewable capacity by 2035. This is not a trend — it is a decade-long hiring mandate. The electrical or mechanical engineer who adds energy systems knowledge to their degree is entering Germany's most future-proof field.

Salary Ranges — Surviving Roles vs Dying Roles

The market is already pricing in AI impact. Roles AI cannot replace pay more — and the gap is widening.

ML / AI Engineer
57k–€92k
Data Engineer (HENSOLDT)
67k–€92k
Embedded Systems (Silver Atena)
69k–€100k
DevOps Engineer (IABG)
75k–€85k
IT Security Engineer
53k–€77k
Elektroingenieur (HENSOLDT)
61k–€85k
SAP Consultant
55k–€80k
Cloud Engineer (Liebherr)
53k–€73k
Physiker/Chemiker (industry)
45k–€75k
Backend Dev (generic)
41k–€64k
Junior Frontend Dev
35k–€48k
Manual QA Tester
35k–€45k
€35k
€100k
Key observation: The dying roles (Junior Frontend €35-48k, Manual QA €35-45k) pay 40–50% less than the surviving specialised roles. Germany's market is already pricing in AI impact. The salary gap between generic and specialised is widening every year.
